Multimodal Traffic-Police Gesture Recognition
Implemented a synchronized LiDAR-camera perception architecture (Ouster LiDAR & Intel RealSense) for autonomous vehicles to recognize eight standardized traffic-police hand gestures in complex Indian road scenarios.
This project recognises standard traffic-police commands by combining 3D LiDAR with RGB video, captured together and time-aligned.
This project fuses two synchronized streams captured at Multimodal Intelligence for Real-World Applications (MI-RA) Lab, IIT Mandi iHub:
- Ouster OS1 LiDAR for body shape, reach, and motion in space
- Intel RealSense RGB for appearance and a full-body skeleton
100 Indian subjects each performed eight standard commands: stop front, stop back, stop left, stop all, allow front, allow left, allow right, and slow down.
People used to train the model are never used to test it. The two sensors are time-aligned, encoded separately, then fused so the model can read the command the officer is giving.
The video on the right shows all eight gestures from one subject: RGB, skeleton, LiDAR, and the predicted class from the same fused model.
